Lil Nas X is facing some serious legal trouble–according to sources the chart-topping artist is facing a $25 million dollar lawsuit
for using elements of Bobby Caldwell’s 1982 song “Carry On” for his own song of the same name.
The copyright lawsuit, which was filed by a company called The Music Force, alleges that the 20-year-old artist used a portion of the 1982 record in his song without permission. He then posted the song on Spotify, SoundCloud and YouTube. The song has gotten 4 million views on the latter platform. The suit also alleges that Sony, who signed Nas X months after the song’s release, should’ve made sure that the viral sensation cleared the sample.
The Music Force is asking for $25 million for damages. They assert that Lil Nas X and Sony ruined the value of the Bobby Caldwell track. So far, neither Sony nor Lil Nas X has issued any comment about the lawsuit.
This news comes days after Lil Nas X received at eight 2019 MTV Video Music Award nominations. His song “Old Town Road” is currently tied for the longest-running No. 1 song in the Billboard Hot 100 chart’s 61-year history.
